Occupational Health &
Safety Policy
1.
POLICY RATIONALE
The objective of this policy is to have Brimbank City Council workplaces free of work related
injury or illness.
2.
POLICY STATEMENT & PRINCIPLES
Brimbank City Council actively controls the risks associated with its operations that may
adversely impact upon people’s health and safety. The health and safety of people is the
primary consideration in all of our activities. Brimbank City Council has a systematic approach
to health and safety that is an integral part of the Brimbank City Council Management System.
3.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
3.1.
Our approach encompasses the following objectives:
a.
Compliance with relevant legislation and regulations, licences, client standards and
initiatives, industry standards and recognised codes of practice.
b.
Appropriate health and safety expertise engaged to assist Brimbank City Council in
achieving the aims of this policy.
c.
Health and safety plans specific to each business operation that address the risks and
identify health and safety risk management systems and procedures that are appropriate
to the nature and scale of the work.
d.
Appropriate resources provided to support the objectives of this policy.
e.
Proactive and preventative risk management practices.
f.
Effectiveness of health and safety plans and this policy monitored through reporting on
measurable performance indicators and regular audits.
g.
Brimbank City Council employees and contractors and all other interested stakeholders
are well informed, well trained, engaged and committed to the health and safety
process.
h.
Understanding that without exception, no activity should be attempted unless it can be
done safely.

3.2.
Brimbank City Council managers are responsible for ensuring that an approved
health and safety plan exists for their area of control. They must ensure that the plan
is implemented and that people working there are complying with the requirements
of this policy and the specific plan.
3.3.
Each person working with Brimbank City Council has a responsibility for health and
safety in their area of work. Individual responsibilities and accountabilities are set out
in Brimbank City Council Management System documents.
3.4.
This policy and the Brimbank City Council Management System are reviewed
periodically to ensure continuing effectiveness and relevance.
