Introduction
This volume of the Brimbank Post-contact Cultural Heritage Study contains maps for locating
the individually listed heritage places and the 11 heritage areas as described in Volume 3 of
the study (Place Reports - Heritage Areas and Individual Places).
The Maps have been printed by the City of Brimbank from their GIS system, based on data
supplied by the consultants.
The Volume 3 place reports include the map number for each place as referred to in the GIS
print-outs, and a summary list of places is included in this volume with a cross-reference to
the map numbers for ease of identification. The maps are arranged numerically, although the
sequence is not continuous, as only areas which contain listed sites have been included.
The heritage study was commenced in 1987. It has been carried out as part of a
comprehensive program of development of strategies for natural and cultural heritage in the
municipality of Brimbank. The first stage program of preparing an environmental history and
a preliminary list of places of potential cultural heritage significance, was followed by a
second stage involving detailed site investigations, and preparation of a heritage program. The
Environmental History was completed in 1998 while copies of the preliminary list of places
were circulated at the same time.
Brimbank City Council commissioned a Cultural Heritage Strategy for the municipality as
part of their overall Corporate Plan for 1995 to 2000. The Cultural Heritage Strategy is in two
parts, comprising Part 1 Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Part 2 Post-contact Cultural
Heritage.
The Post-contact Cultural Heritage Strategy was carried out in two stages: Stage 1 -
Preliminary Survey and Environmental History and Stage 2 - Place Documentation and
assessment and development of heritage program.
The Post-contact Cultural Heritage Strategy report documents all stages of the study in four
volumes:
Volume 1
contains the environmental history and historical themes;
Volume 2
contains the introduction, methodology, summary of recommendations, statutory
and non-statutory heritage provisions, conservation policy for heritage areas and a summary
listing of all places investigated during the study. It also contains a discussion of the
significance and character of Brimbank’s cultural heritage and a listing of all places
investigated in the course of the study.
Volume 3
contains individual site reports for places of cultural significance and citations for
each of the 11 heritage areas. It also includes indexes to places according to street address,
location and place name.
Volume 4
contains maps of the individual heritage places, and the 11 heritage areas, along
with a list of the places indexed to the relevant map numbers and place numbers.

Approximately located places
The following places have been located approximately on the maps. This is for a number of
reasons. In some cases, available base mapping is insufficiently detailed to precisely locate a
building or site in a large allotment, for example the Robertson homestead at Keilor. In other
cases the boundaries of the heritage place do not conform to property boundaries, such as the
Black Powder Mill. In general, these are places which also do not have a clear street number,
although every attempt has been made to provide sufficient information to accurately locate
the sites.
