Build and support a reliable,
quality bus network
Move more people, more efficiently
Cater for booming population growth
Reduce road congestion
Brimbank Council is advocating for reliable, frequent,
easy to use bus services that take people where they want
to go, through:
• More frequent buses all day, every day
• More services to places people want to go, such as Melbourne Airport
• Bus priority lanes on key routes so that buses can bypass congestion
The need
Bus services in Brimbank are low frequency.
This means that they are a less attractive
option for most trips, compared to car travel.
Trips per day in Brimbank
14,000
24,000
300,000+
Most households in Brimbank have two or three cars,
which is a significant drain on the family budget, and
contributes to increasing congestion on our road
network.
Brimbank’s population is forecast to reach more than
230,000 by 2041. As our population grows, so will
traffic congestion increase, both within Brimbank and
on major connecting traffic routes.
The congestion on the Western Ring Road, or West Gate
Freeway continues to grow, even though these roads
have been significantly expanded in the last few years.
The bus network needs to be able to move more people.
If it doesn’t then our road network will reach capacity in
peak periods, significantly increasing commute times.
Additionally there are several popular destinations that
are not serviced by public transport through Brimbank
such as Melbourne Airport and surrounds.
The ask
More people will use the bus network
if it is:
• frequent
• direct
• reliable
• fast
• available all day.
The network needs to be reliable. Commuters
need to know that the bus will arrive on time,
and at the same time every day.
To achieve this, we need to build bus priority
lanes in areas of congestion. The bus then
can bypass the congestion, and run on time
and to timetable.
Bus service levels need to increase. Currently,
bus services are more focused on the journey
to work - travel to the CBD during peak
periods. However, trips to work only make
up about a quarter* of trips taken in a given
day. We need to increase the frequency of
services connecting residential areas to
town centres, in order to better cater for the
majority of trips and entice more people to
travel by bus.
*Household Travel Survey Report:
Sydney 2012/13, Bureau of Transport Statistics (BTS)
of Transport for NSW .
Population is growing rapidly in Melbourne’s west, and
our roads are getting more congested. We have to use road
space more effectively so more people can travel in the
west. This means more people will need to travel by a high
quality bus network
• Provide a bus service at least every

• Build bus priority lanes where roads are
