SUNSHINE SUPER HUB:
THE NEXUS OF THE WEST
Sunshine Station is a key stop on the planned Melbourne
Airport Rail and connect regional rail services from
Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat into Melbourne.
The station has the capacity to function as a world-class
multi-nodal transport hub and as a catalyst in unlocking
the immense potential of the west.
An integrated development at Sunshine Station,
includes new buildings integrated with the station
environs, entry and concourse, with uses needed for
a vibrant CBD, such as offices, cafés and restaurants
and civic uses such as art galleries (as suggested by
WOMEDA’s
Sunshine Daring to Be Great
and Council’s
Leading with Vision, Transforming Brimbank Future
Priorities 2050
).
An integrated development at Sunshine Station
will also connect with the existing street network,
such as continuing the pedestrian paths from
Hampshire Rd, Clarke St and Devonshire Rd across
to Sun Cres and HV McKay Memorial Gardens.
Council has undertaken extensive community
consultation and reviewed existing Council and
Victorian Government policy to consider the best future
improvements to both Sunshine Station and Albion
Station. The detail of these improvements are outlined
in
Leading with Vision, Transforming Brimbank Future
Priorities 2050
.
This has included preliminary work on two potential
scenarios for the location and function of the
Sunshine Station and investigations of Albion Station.
The scenarios considered the location of utilities
including high pressure gas lines, key heritage items and
neighbourhoods, key cycle routes and flooding impacts.
To meet service uplift, multiple scenarios were explored
— both stacked and at grade.
The stacked scenario has been discounted due to the
amount of up track and down track work required to
get both scenarios working, the associated costs and
undesirable passenger outcomes.
Council has considered an option with the station
in its current location and a second option which
includes moving both Sunshine and Albion stations
further north.
These options are exploratory only and further work
is needed on the state-led project to determine the
best outcome that minimises impact and acquisition
and delivers significant community benefit.

SCENARIO 2: SUNSHINE STATION IS MOVED NORTH
In Scenario 2, Sunshine Station is moved north into a super-hub. Moving Sunshine Station north to span
the knuckle where the northern and western spurs meet, offers opportunity to make an additional connection
to the third ‘island’ site to the north, between the two spurs. Relocating the station north provides a
tremendous opportunity to deliver seamless connection, activation and enhancement of the Sunshine
CBD and can be achieved with adaptations to the ground plane and rail levels.

Albion has the capacity to function in a complementary partnership with Sunshine, building a strength of
connection across Ballarat Road and evolving to support aerotropolis and education functions. By relocating
the station to the north, free movement both north-south and east-west across physical barriers is improved.
This renewed connectivity supports land uses to the north of Ballarat Road being enhanced.
